The digital asset market continued to experience heightened volatility in March 2026, influenced by macroeconomic uncertainty and escalating geopolitical tensions. Bitcoin traded primarily within the US$65,000 to US$75,000 range during the month. It opened the month at approximately US$66,100(A$96,000), reached a low near US$65,015 on 29 March, and closed the month at approximately US$68,300 (A$96,300). The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) increased the official cash rate by 25 basis points to 4.10% in March. Escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, alongside rising oil prices, contributed to renewed inflation concerns, which in turn weighed on investor sentiment and contributed to market volatility.
Regulatory developments continued to evolve across key global jurisdictions. In the U.S., the SEC and CFTC signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to coordinate their regulatory approaches to digital assets and emerging technologies. The MOU establishes a framework for coordinated oversight across areas including product definitions, clearing and margin, digital assets, and enforcement, with the goal of reducing regulatory duplication and fostering greater market clarity. In addition, updated crypto guidance from the SEC and CFTC indicated that a significant proportion of digital assets may fall outside the definition of securities, providing further clarity to market participants.
Despite a price correction during the month, institutional adoption continued to strengthen. NASDAQ announced a collaboration with cryptocurrency exchange Kraken to develop tokenisation infrastructure, reflecting growing institutional interest in blockchain-based financial markets. NYSE Arca and NYSE American eliminated the 25,000-contract position and exercise limits for spot bitcoin and ether ETF options. This change places crypto ETF options on a more consistent footing with other commodity-based ETF options across major U.S. exchanges.
The digital asset treasury (DAT) sector experienced more challenging conditions amid Bitcoin price volatility and weaker earning reports from several participants. Strategy (formerly MicroStrategy) increased its Bitcoin holdings from 713,502 BTC at the end of February to 762,099 BTC at the end of March, representing a net purchase of 48,597 BTC during the month. In Asia, Japan-based Metaplanet raised approximately US$255 million via a share placement to global institutional investors, with warrants that could bring total funding to around US$531 million. The company plans to allocate up to US$357 million toward Bitcoin acquisitions, targeting 100,000 BTC by 2026 and 210,000 BTC by 2027.
Despite price volatility observed throughout March, the fundamental drivers supporting Bitcoin remain intact. Institutional adoption, continued development of market infrastructure, and increasing regulatory engagement continue to reinforce Bitcoin’s evolving role within the global financial system.
